The experience built within the framework of the project Education in Values and Human Rights in Teacher Training in Higher Education shows the commitment undertaken by the University of Osnabrück, the University of Costa Rica and the National University through the support received from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the thematic collaborations program with higher education institutions in developing countries during the period of validity from 2018 to 2021.
Education in Values and Human Rights is a subject of transcendental relevance for the training of future professionals and, especially, for initial teacher training, as education is key in the socio-cultural transformation towards a more just, equitable, inclusive and human rights respecting society.
This reflection is crucial for the actions carried out, both investigative and training, which were promoted by the study and analysis of the curricula in the field of humanities and teacher training in the three universities and sociocultural contexts.
This process has had the participation of internationally renowned experts, who have contributed to the collective construction of knowledge and facilitated the exchange of lessons learned.
One of the most outstanding results was to determine that most of the assessed curricula shared as a trait that training in values and human rights had an implicit or transversal character, without being able to observe the impact on vocational training. This situation allows the development of four courses that together could be offered as a module for training in education for and in human rights and values, in an academic, systematic and explicit way in university training, taking into account the local specificities in order to improve the quality of teaching in universities.
The design of these courses benefited from including the presence of the student population, since it was possible to share the material produced on two occasions, listen to and become aware of their voices and feedback through the experience of two summer schools, one based in the University of Osnabrück and another in the University of Costa Rica.
The challenge for the international research team is to implement these courses within the framework of universities, collaborate with other public and private entities, provide feedback on experiences and continue innovation in research and training processes in education in values and human rights.
