Activities

While the project was developed from 2018 to 2021, there are several important antecedents that gave way to the academic collaboration:
- Joint publications between the University of Costa Rica and the University of Osnabrück.
- Participation of Dr. Susanne Müller-Using in the Editorial Committee of the Journal “Actualidades Investigativas en Educación” (Research News in Education) of the INIE.

- Academic visits to Germany in 2013 and 2014 by representatives of the University of Costa Rica and the National University.
- Summer School 2015: "Facing the Future - Universal Values and Peace Building towards a Cohesive and Sustainable Democratic Society" (San José, Costa Rica)
- Summer School 2016 and 2017: “Cultural Competencies” (Osnabrück, Germany)

2018

- The first working meeting of the research group was from April 03 to 06 in San José, Costa Rica, which included an inaugural lecture on the topic of human rights education. A visit was made to the University for Peace, a place that was also used as a working space. In this first meeting, the objectives and goals of the project were presented.



- From September 15 to 22, the second annual meeting of the project was held in Osnabrück and Berlin, Germany. In this meeting, the research group shared with representatives of the Sievert Foundation and the Costa Rica Center of the University of Osnabrück was officially inaugurated. In addition, the research group received training in pedagogy and human rights, visited the Reckhan Museum and the German Institute for Human Rights.


2019

- From March 25 to 29, 2019, the third meeting of the project was held in Heredia and Guanacaste, Costa Rica. On this occasion, the group had the opportunity to present the progress and results of the products; It also included training in education in values and human rights for teaching, and the definition of quality criteria for an education in values and human rights. The second part of the meeting consisted of a tour to the Liberia Headquarters of the National University.



- During the week of September 16 to 20, the fourth meeting of the project took place in Osnabrück, Germany. In this meeting, the final products that respond to the first objectives of the project were presented: establishment of a theoretical reference, determination of the incorporation of education in values and human rights within the study plans, and identification of good practices. The preparation of the courses began. Activities like training on topics such as human rights and gender education, education for sustainable development, and interculturality were also included and a visit was made to a model elementary school.


2020

- From March 02 to 06, the fifth meeting of the research project was held in San José, Costa Rica. In this meeting, the course programs and the outcome of the research project were presented. The group went on a tour to Matambú, Nicoya in order to establish intercultural dialogues with educational actors and the community in general. This meeting also included the Symposium: Human Rights and Values, with lectures on topics such as the implementation of human rights education in the educational system, its relationship with teacher training and strategies for human rights education.



- Due to the pandemic, the sixth annual meeting of the project was held virtually, on September 16 and 17. One of the main activities of this meeting was to discuss the progress in the implementation of the courses in the universities participating in the project. The group also began writing about the teacher profile in human rights education, and the organization of the Summer School 2021 was discussed.

2021

- Likewise, on April 13 and 14, the seventh meeting of the project was held virtually. The progress in the implementation of the courses in the Universities and the progress in the publication on the teaching profile in human rights education were presented. The first steps for the creation of the project´s Web platform were established and important details about the Summer School 2021 were discussed.

- As a parallel activity to the project, from July 27 to August 6 and from November 19 to 26, the Summer School: "Education in Values and Human Rights in teacher training for the present and future university" took place, with the attendance of students from the three participating universities. The contents addressed in this school correspond to the courses produced by the project.

- On September 28 and 29 the eighth meeting of the project was held virtually. On this occasion, the Universities gave a presentation on the implementation of the courses, and a discussion was held on the progress in the publications and the creation of the Web platform.

- As this is the last year of the project, on December 1st and 2nd the closing meeting was held and the results were presented.
